# E2B

E2B gives an AI agent an isolated Linux machine (a sandbox) that boots from a template in under a second. The agent runs commands, edits files, installs packages, and reaches the internet inside the sandbox instead of on the host. This skill covers setup and the day-one surface. Docs are the source of truth: https://docs.e2b.dev

You already know most of the SDK. Follow this file for what agents get wrong: the key handoff, package names, the Node module format, and cleanup. Ask the user only where a step says to.

## Quick Setup

**Step 1: API key**

Check the shell environment and any `.env` file for `E2B_API_KEY`. If it is present, go to Step 2. If not, stop, send the user exactly this, and wait:

> I need your E2B API key. Create one at https://console.e2b.dev/?tab=keys (new account: https://e2b.dev/auth/sign-up?signup_source=agent). Copy the value that starts with `e2b_`; a dashed value without the `e2b_` prefix is an ID, not the key. Then run: `export E2B_API_KEY=e2b_...`

Never repair a value that does not start with `e2b_` (no stripping dashes, no adding the prefix); ask again with the same hint. Keep the key in the environment or a gitignored `.env`, never in source. If you have browser tools and are asked to fetch the key yourself, open that URL, create a key if none exists, copy the `e2b_` value, and hand back once if a login is required.

**Step 2: Detect the project, do not ask**

- `package.json` present: JavaScript/TypeScript. Match the lockfile, the `"type"` field, and how env vars load.
- `pyproject.toml` or `requirements.txt` present: Python.
- Neither: create a minimal Python project in a new subdirectory, unless the user named a language.

**Step 3: Install**

Exact names only. There is no `@e2b-dev/` npm scope (that is the GitHub org); the packages are `e2b`, `@e2b/code-interpreter`, and `@e2b/cli`.

```bash
# Python 3.10+
python3 -m venv .venv && source .venv/bin/activate && pip install e2b
# or: uv add e2b
# JavaScript / TypeScript, Node 20.18.1+ or 22+ (not 21)
npm install e2b
```

Use `@e2b/code-interpreter` (npm) or `e2b-code-interpreter` (pip) only when the project needs `runCode` / `run_code` with rich results (charts, tables, stdout per cell). The core `e2b` package covers commands, files, and lifecycle.

Node only: the verification script uses top-level `await`. Run it with `npx tsx` or as a `.mjs` file. Set `"type": "module"` in `package.json` only in a fresh project, never in an existing one.

**Step 4: Verify with one real run**

Write one script that creates a sandbox, prints its ID, runs `echo "hello from e2b"`, prints stdout and the exit code, and kills the sandbox in a `finally` block. The SDK does not read `.env` on its own: if the key lives there, run with `node --env-file=.env` or `python-dotenv`.

```typescript
import { Sandbox } from "e2b"
const sandbox = await Sandbox.create({ timeoutMs: 120_000 })
try {
  console.log(sandbox.sandboxId)
  const result = await sandbox.commands.run('echo "hello from e2b"')
  console.log(result.stdout, result.exitCode)
} finally {
  await sandbox.kill()
}
```

```python
from e2b import Sandbox
sandbox = Sandbox.create(timeout=120)
try:
    print(sandbox.sandbox_id)
    result = sandbox.commands.run('echo "hello from e2b"')
    print(result.stdout, result.exit_code)
finally:
    sandbox.kill()
```

Pass: stdout `hello from e2b`, exit code 0, kill completed. Sandboxes bill per second and count against a per-plan concurrency limit, so `finally` is not optional. Do not proceed to anything else until this passes.

## Choosing the Right Tool

| Task | Tool | Why |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Run shell commands, edit files, install packages | Core SDK (`e2b`) | `commands.run`, `files.*`, lifecycle, works in any language the sandbox has |
| Execute Python or JavaScript and get charts, tables, per-cell output | Code Interpreter SDK | `runCode` / `run_code` returns structured results, built for LLM tool calls |
| Inspect or kill sandboxes, build templates from a terminal | CLI (`e2b`) | `e2b sandbox list`, `e2b sandbox kill`, `e2b template ...` |
| Pre-installed tools, services, or a repo checked out at boot | Templates | Define once, sandboxes start from the snapshot instantly |
| Keep a sandbox's state between sessions | Pause, resume, snapshots | Filesystem and memory survive; resume where the agent left off |
| Run Claude Code, Codex, or another coding agent on a machine that is not the host | Prebuilt agent templates | `claude`, `codex`, and more under https://docs.e2b.dev/agents |
| Look anything up beyond this file | Docs MCP server | https://docs.e2b.dev/mcp, no auth, semantic search over the docs |

## Core SDK

Both SDKs share one shape. JavaScript is `camelCase` and awaited; Python is `snake_case` and synchronous.

```typescript
import { Sandbox } from "e2b"
const sandbox = await Sandbox.create({ timeoutMs: 300_000 }) // default template "base", default timeout 5 minutes
await sandbox.setTimeout(600_000) // extend from now
const result = await sandbox.commands.run("python3 --version") // result.stdout, result.stderr, result.exitCode
await sandbox.files.write("/home/user/hello.txt", "hi")
const text = await sandbox.files.read("/home/user/hello.txt")
const entries = await sandbox.files.list("/home/user")
const again = await Sandbox.connect(sandbox.sandboxId) // reattach from another process
await sandbox.kill()
```

```python
from e2b import Sandbox
sandbox = Sandbox.create(timeout=300)
sandbox.set_timeout(600)
result = sandbox.commands.run("python3 --version")  # result.stdout, result.stderr, result.exit_code
sandbox.files.write("/home/user/hello.txt", "hi")
text = sandbox.files.read("/home/user/hello.txt")
entries = sandbox.files.list("/home/user")
again = Sandbox.connect(sandbox.sandbox_id)
sandbox.kill()
```

- Timeout units differ: `timeoutMs` is milliseconds in JavaScript, `timeout` is seconds in Python. Both default to 5 minutes, after which the sandbox is killed unless the timeout was extended or a pause-on-timeout lifecycle was configured (https://docs.e2b.dev/sandbox.md).
- Pass secrets to the sandbox with `envs` on `Sandbox.create`, not by writing them into files.
- Regions are selected with the `E2B_DOMAIN` environment variable (or the `domain` option). Keys, templates, and sandbox IDs do not cross regions (https://docs.e2b.dev/client.md).

## CLI

```bash
npm install -g @e2b/cli   # or: brew install e2b
export E2B_API_KEY=e2b_... # the CLI reads the process environment only, not .env
e2b sandbox list           # running sandboxes for the key's project
e2b sandbox kill <id>      # or: e2b sandbox kill --all
e2b template list
```

`e2b auth login` opens a browser and stores a login; use it when there is no key in the environment and the user is present. `e2b sandbox create <template>` attaches an interactive terminal and kills the sandbox when you exit, so do not use it as a scripted check.

## Run a Coding Agent Inside a Sandbox

The prebuilt `claude` template has Claude Code installed. Headless run, from https://docs.e2b.dev/agents/claude-code.md:

```typescript
import { Sandbox } from "e2b"
const sandbox = await Sandbox.create("claude", {
  envs: { ANTHROPIC_API_KEY: process.env.ANTHROPIC_API_KEY },
})
const result = await sandbox.commands.run(
  'claude --dangerously-skip-permissions -p "Create a hello world HTTP server in Go"'
)
console.log(result.stdout)
await sandbox.kill()
```

Auto-approving tool calls is contained by the sandbox: the agent cannot touch the host. It can still reach the internet unless you restrict outbound traffic (https://docs.e2b.dev/network/internet-access.md). Other agents (Codex, Cursor, Devin, Amp) have their own pages under https://docs.e2b.dev/agents.

## Troubleshooting

Match the symptom, apply the fix, re-run Step 4 once.

- **npm 404 on `@e2b-dev/...`**: wrong scope. Use `e2b` or `@e2b/code-interpreter`.
- **"Cannot use import statement" or a top-level `await` error**: CommonJS scaffold. Run with `npx tsx` or as `.mjs`; set `"type": "module"` only in a fresh project.
- **"Unauthorized" mentioning "expected the e2b_ prefix"**: the value is an ID or another service's token. Re-ask with the Step 1 hint.
- **"Unauthorized" mentioning "Cannot get the team"**: an `e2b_` value that was truncated when copied, is revoked, or belongs to a different region than `E2B_DOMAIN`. Do not retry it; ask for a fresh paste or a new key.
- **"API key is required"**: `E2B_API_KEY` is not visible to the process. Check how `.env` is loaded.
- **Concurrency or limit error**: a sandbox leaked. `e2b sandbox list`, then `e2b sandbox kill <id>`. Plan limits: https://docs.e2b.dev/billing.md
- **Sandbox gone mid-task**: the timeout expired. Create with a longer `timeoutMs` / `timeout`, or call `setTimeout` / `set_timeout` while working.
